VOLCANO

Semi-Detailed Lesson Plan in Science 9

Volcanoes are one of the most fascinating and powerful natural phenomena on Earth. They have shaped our planet's landscape, influenced climate patterns, and impacted human civilizations throughout history. In this lesson, students will embark on an exciting journey to explore the world of volcanoes. By the end of the lesson, learners will be able to identify different types of volcanoes, explain their characteristics, differentiate between each type, and understand the importance of precautions during volcanic eruptions. This comprehensive lesson will ignite students' curiosity and deepen their appreciation for the dynamic forces that shape our planet.

Quarter 3 Week 1 Day 1

I. Learning Objectives:

At the end of the lesson, learners should be able to:

a.      Identify different types of volcano;

b.      explain the characteristics of a volcano;

c.       differentiate each type of volcano; and

d.      value the precautions during volcanic eruption.

II. Subject Matter:

            Lesson                         :           VOLCANO

            References                  :           K to 12 Curriculum Guide/MELCs BOW Week 1 S9ES -IIIb-28

Instructional Materials          :           Laptop, Projector, Video Clips

Integration                   :         Integrate Aral. Pan. lesson about “ Anyong Lupa” which volcano is one of the example.

                                             Integrate DRRM disaster preparedness

III. Learning Procedure

Prayer                                   :   The teacher will call one student to lead the prayer

Attendance                :    The teacher will ask the assigned leader (per column in their seating arrangement) if    who’s   not around, so that the teacher can easily check the attendance.

Review                       :     Recall previous lesson

Motivation               :      The teacher will let the students guess the scrambled words

v  Activity     : Volcano Word Cloud

Objective: The learners shall be able to describe a volcano and its parts

What you need: Cellular Phone with Internet Connectivity

What to do: 1. Using Mentimeter Code, think of five words or phrases that you can associate with a volcano.

Mentimeter Code: 6812 0870

v  Analysis :

            a. Process the activity

            b. Ask further questions:

b.1 How did you find this activity? Is it fun?

b.2  Is it hard? Is it easy?

c. Let us find out in if the answers are associated with volcano.

v Abstraction:

a. Proceed to the main lesson “The types of volcano according to its shape and volcanic eruption.

Notes:

Volcano – are natural opening in the earths’ surface where molten rocks, smoke, gases and ashes are ejected.

Crater-  is a funnel shape depression at the top formed as a result of explosive eruption.

Magma- hot fluid material below the earths’ crust

Lava- magma that has been ejected out of a volcano

A volcanic eruption is the expulsion of gases, rock fragments, and/or molten lava from within the Earth through a vent onto the Earth's surface or into the atmosphere.

Types of Volcano

Volcano can be classified according to its Shape and Eruption

Types of Volcano according to its shape

Shield volcanoes

-This is formed by the accumulation of lava oozes out from the volcano. Since non-viscous lava can flow freely, a broad, slightly doomed structure that resembles warrior shield is formed.

Cinder Cone Volcanoes

-          This is built from ejected lava fragments. They have a steep slope, wide crater and is most abundant of the three major volcanoes.

Composite volcanoes

-Also known as Stratovolcano. This is large nearly perfect sloped structure formed from the alternate solidification of both lava and pyroclastic deposits.

 Notes:

Types of Volcanic Eruption

1.Phreatic- It is a stream driven eruption as the hot rocks come in contact with water.

2.Phreatomagmatic- It is a violent eruption due to the contact between water and magma

3.Strombolian- It is a period weak to violent eruption characterized by fountain lava

4.Vulcanian- It is characterize by tall eruption that reach up to 20km high with pyroclastic flow and ash fall tephra

5.Plinian- It is excessively explosive type of eruption of vast gas and pyroclastic

v  Application (ACTIVITY TIME)

The students will be grouped into 5, each group will be assigned to each type of volcano according to its eruption. They will be the one to describe the assigned video that was shown by the teacher.

Answers and possible descriptions by students:

Types of Volcanic Eruption

1.Phreatic- It is a stream driven eruption as the hot rocks come in contact with water.

2.Phreatomagmatic- It is a violent eruption due to the contact between water and magma

3.Strombolian- It is a period weak to violent eruption characterized by fountain lava

4.Vulcanian- It is characterize by tall eruption that reach up to 20km high with pyroclastic flow and ash fall tephra

5.Plinian- It is excessively explosive type of eruption of vast gas and pyroclastic.

Guide questions:

Why is it important to know about volcanoes? Why should we care?

Why is there a need to know the preparation before the volcanic eruption?
